The show was a little too heavy plotted and self-aware. I needed to feel impulsive and unhinged and instead it was too careful, methodical and plodding—almost becoming a parody of itself.
Ah, that explains it — you were production designer on the show. Darabont is a great writer — better than I ever will be — but this just all felt like he was aiming for standard, not good, work. This show was inauthentic and therefore you never cared about any aspect of its execution. Casting was pretty boy network and it smacked of WB back-lot production with that hazy saturation they love to light for and those wet streets every show shot at that studio employs.
Boardwalk Empire is genius week in and week out, this was safe and obvious. They should have kept the original title. I forgot this show was even on. I tried to watch the pilot, but fell asleep twice. It happens and it sucks! Anything Ellroy-like is worth the venture but this was not good. Boardwalk Empire set the bar too high to do it on the cheap.
And I must agree with him, I quite liked the slow introduction of the characters in the First double episode. It surely is a more efficient way of beginning a show, storywise especially with a Noir context. Others are comparing it to Boardwalk, even if both are set in a Gangsters context, they are nothing alike. So great actors, great photography, Frank Fucking Darabont, what else do you need, but here I am again, Fast Food, Fast shows, you get what you deserve.

I was at the premiere and Frank Darabont went out of his way to praise TNT…Michael Wright specifically as a dream executive who allowed him to craft his artistic vision…so do not speak about something you do not know of…Mob City was well crafted, well acted, well directed. But I do know that the statement that they are eager to work with Mr.
Darabont again is not press release speak…it is genuine. I for one will look forward to seeing whatever they come up with. I love gangster films. I eagerly anticipated Mob City for months. But when the show actually aired, I just barely made it theough the first two hours. It was deadly dull and impossible to emotionally connect with any of the characters. It is not surprising that viewing dropped off so sharply to the point that it was cancelled. It was ridiculously violent.
The mob never engaged in machinegun battles in the streets of LA. It was like watching Dick Tracy, except this was the missing episodes, when Tracy was on vacation. All that money blown on cliches.
If you are going to mimic the style do something different with the story. If you are going to mimic the story, do something different with the style. Added nothing new, which really surprised me with Darabont involved. Not to mention the trailers and spots resembled E! True Hollywood Story with no aesthetic at all. A must see television event! From Scorcese to The Sopranos… license better music that sells a particular feeling to encourages people to take notice.

But it took them almost 2 years, I think, to release it. And it was kind of boring at first 2 episodes. Then it got better. When you understood who is who and what is happening. And I actually liked last two episodes. I would like to see few more in second season.
Show has very good cinematography, attention to details. Some sequences are shot very good. It was probably very expensive to do this show. CGI, costumes, cinematography, pace — everything was good.
